ABOUT

Formed by Mojisola Ayorinde, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who started her journey in healthcare as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). She worked in a CILA program where she gained insight into how crucial mental health is to a productive life. It was through the eyes of her patients that she realized she needed to do more than just make a living. She started her nursing career at a nursing home before moving to psychiatric care, where she saw firsthand the difference in being mentally fit and not. Yet, these are human beings for whom nothing shows what they’re going through except that they speak, or one has empathy, patience, and a caring spirit to have the slightest idea of what these people are experiencing, to at least hear or understand them. Mojisola has since made it her mission to meet her patients where they are, without judgment, and get with them on their journey to a more meaningful and productive life. Hence, Mojiayo Healthcare Services, Inc. The name of this business speaks for itself; a constant reminder to have her name in it speaks of the purpose of the company and her mission to empower her patients to take the initiative to make decisions about their health, and not passively comply with her or others’ decisions for them.

Mojisola has demonstrated empathy in maintaining her patients’ dignity, from the one who walks into her office not wanting to talk to smiling and thanking her upon leaving. Mojisola works with both children and adults. She wanted to follow the norm to just care for adults alone, so she wouldn’t have to deal with some parents. But when she realized child psychiatry was scarce, she changed her mind when a parent told her that her child was on a one-year waiting list to see a psychiatrist. The parent was crying and helpless. She was upset that her child’s school would call, she would leave her job to pick the child, etc. The parent couldn’t tell whether the child was being picked on or every complaint about her child was true.

Today, Mojisola is honored to work with children too. She calls it “across the life span” as her license denotes…licensed to treat all age groups. Her sincerity to maintain her patients’ dignity is evident with every encounter to ask the children to tell her “one good thing about yourself.” What a joy and laughter it is for everyone present: the parents, the patients, and Mojisola herself. From I’m nice, I’m a good dancer, I’m confident, I’m good at making presentations, and so the list goes on. Those who show up crying, feeling hopeless, helpless, maligned, rejected, or simply feeling they don’t belong, meeting Mojisola changes their dynamics every time. For example, a Caucasian man walked in to tell Mojisola not to judge him, crying. At the end of the session, he didn’t feel any judgement. He turned out to be one of Mojisola’s favorite patients, if there’s any title like that. He asked Mojisola to take him with her if she were to leave that practice. From feeling judged to sharing other aspects of his life that only compassion could have reached, Mojisola calls it the “highest honor.” If there’s any message in Mojisola’s mission, it’s to see those with mental illness, first, as a human being. Then, as someone whose illness is not visible to anyone else as bleeding, wounds, swelling, bandage application, or any sort of injuries. If you can help anyone with a visible illness, please do the same for those with mental illnesses.
